After a spell of beautiful weather we've had heavy rain and gusty winds. See how our chicks are coping
https://www.facebook.com/LochoftheLowes ... 4611845295
The weather has been wild to say the least this evening, with thunderstorms, hailstones, high winds and torrential rain.
As a consequence our internet connection and livestream are struggling a bit, but the good news is NC0 has done an amazing job keeping her chicks sheltered from the storm and has found her 'dinner voice' again!
Species Protection Officer Dani captured these fantastic shots after the storm passed.
NC0's left eye can be opened a little, hope she gets better soon

What's on the menu here at Lowes? From salmon to pike, discover some of the different kinds of fish that LM12 brings to the nest in our latest blog by Species Protection Officer Charlotte.

Life is tough for the youngest osprey chick at the moment. LM12 is bringing less fish to the nest, which is leading to fierce competition between the chicks. The smallest of the three chicks is naturally losing out to its larger, stronger siblings.
We’re keeping our fingers crossed that LM12 will start bringing in more fish soon. This will reduce competition between the chicks and increase the chances of survival for the youngest.

Some sad news from the nest this morning. Unfortunately the youngest chick has passed away following an attack by its older sibling. You can read more in our latest blog: https://scottishwildlifetrust.org.uk/20 ... -the-nest/
Thanks for all of your kind messages and comments showing concern for the chick over the last few days. We can't reply to every message but we understand it's been incredibly difficult to watch this natural behaviour play out.

After a day of not appearing on the webcam LM12 was spotted bringing a nice fish back just now and earlier this morning. He was also spotted chasing off invading ospreys late evening yesterday - keeping himself busy!

Its the summer solstice and what better demonstration of the reason for Osprey migration to Scotland than LM12 bringing in the monster fish at 4:30 am.
The long daylight hours here provide ample opportunity for the chicks to feed on so much fish and grow so quickly. Osprey chicks will gain approximately 70% of their adult body weight in their first 5 weeks of life. Often this rapid growth period will coincide with late June and is aided by the extra food provided by the vital extra fishing hours.

The 'Top Gun' sequel might be the big hit in the cinemas right now, but we have our very own 'Maverick' here at Loch of the Lowes.
Ranger Raz has been keeping an eye on the nest and reported watching LM12 spend over an hour defending his territory from no less than 5 osprey at once this morning!
No sooner had he seen them off the premises he went straight into hunting mode, serving up two fish for lunch!
He will be requesting a 'flyby past the (hide) tower' next!

Both osprey chicks have been ringed to help follow their future movements. The oldest has been ringed LP8 and the younger chick is LR0.
This work takes just a few minutes and was carried out last night by an experienced, licenced ringer. It wasn't possible to reliably sex the chicks during ringing this year, so they will keep us guessing for a while yet.
You can read more in our latest blog: https://scottishwildlifetrust.org.uk/20 ... en-ringed/

Good evening all, we are pleased to announce that our chicks have successfully been ringed this evening. Both adults were in close attendance throughout and NC0 is back on her favourite fishing perch on the split birch tree.
We will share more details and photos tomorrow.
Many thanks to Keith Brockie once again for his experienced and swift work.

It's been a bit of a milestone week in the lives of our young osprey chicks, with wing flapping, learning to grab fish, beginning to self feed and of course the all important ringing all having occurred.
