Estonian LSE nest (BS)

May 31

It was a beautiful day at the forest, sunny although a rather strong wind.
Image
It became a little too much for Tuuli at a certain point.

She works a lot at the nest the last days and brings here a beak full with straws or twigs.
Image

Remo has done his utmost: he delivered 8 mammals, in various sizes:
Also 1 UBA and this very large one was brought at last:

Image

Could it be a marter or something like it? (ferret maybe?)
Tuuli has taken some time-outs, the longest was for 17 minutes.

June 1

35th day of incubation, the excitement is growing.
It was beautiful weather today, dry, sunny, although strong wind now and again.

Cam was off for 1 hour in the morning and in the afternoon broke at about 4 o'clock and did not come back.
From what I have seen, Remo brought 3 mammals, medium sized.

Image

Tuuli was very busy making toilet and renovating the nest. She took a time-out without Remo being at the eggs of 29 minutes and brougt home these decorations.

Image

Let's hope everything goes allright, and we will see saturday what has happened.

In the afternoon we were connected with the camera again.
It is day 37 of the incubation periode.

Tuuli has done even more renovations to the nest, much more coniferous twigs brought in and in the nestbowl there are twigs with green leaves surrounding the eggs.

1 mammal was brought in by Remo while we were watching.

It is getting darker already and Tuuli is on the eggs, quietly and sometimes cleaning her feathers.

June 4

Day 38, and it was a marvellous day. The sun shone all day and only towards the afternoon the wind got a little bit stronger.

Remo has done his very best, started the day by bringing Tuuli a large frog and after that 6 little mammals of different sizes. So a total of 7 prey's.

The last one a very big, little mammal, which gave her trouble swallowing it.

Image

After 1 of that mammals which Tuuli took with her flying away, she stayed away for 3 hours and some minutes, all the time leaving Remo on the eggs.

Image

causing him to sleep and yawn, and staying out afterwards for more than 2 hours.

No changes to be seen at the eggs, but Tuuli is very curious about them, watching them every few minutes, turning them when needed and very busy with it.
Many birds are singing right now, as the day is almost ending.

Day 39 and the excitement is growing. Nobody has seen any changes in the eggs so far but Tuuli's behaviour seems slightly different. She is very busy rooting up the material underneath the eggs and seems quieter than usual.
Image

Image

Remo has been busy supplying Tuuli with food, but mainly during the morning hours. He brought her 2 salamanders, 1 frog, 4 mammals in various sizes and 1 mammal which was probably a mole. That last mole was brought in, in the afternoon. So a total of 8 prey's. All food was eaten at the nest and Tuuli only left twice for a short break, 1 of 11 minutes, the other break was even shorter.

The weather was nice, sunny spells and a bit stronger wind after midday.
It is still early, so more food may be delivered. Birds are singing around Tuuli, who is lying very calm, awaiting things.......

Day 40 of the incubation periode and stil no obvious crack or pip to be seen

Image

The weather was good. Remo delivered many mammals, 8 in total, of various sizes. One seemed to be a mole.
Tuuli took several time-outs from the eggs and stayed away for more than 2 hours on her longest break of today.

Image
Remo had enough of it after 2 hours and left; soon after which Tuuli returned.

When they left the "stick" went too, so it is probably some kind of prey.

Some days are harder to watch the cam than others. Today was somewhat a dull day.

The weather was good, dry, with more wind towards the end of the morning. Remo has done his best to deliver food for Tuuli. We counted 8 prey's in total, of which were 4 little mammals, of various sizes, 1 large frog and 3 unknown.

Again in the afternoon Tuuli left the eggs for Remo to take care of and stayed away for 2 hours and 18 minutes.

Image
Remo is the only bird I have ever seen who tries to turn the eggs with his paws.

Today was day 41 of the incubation periode and nothing seems to have changed in the appearance of the eggs.

Day 42 of the incubation periode and no signifcant signs of hatching of the first egg.
It can look rather strange at times, at a certain light

Image

Almost as if half is eaten away, but then when it is in an other way it looks completely different.

Remo did very well today and brougt 9 little mammals to Tuuli, in various sizes and species.

Image

Tuuli stayed at the nest all day, only went a few times to fly a little and to take care of things.
Remo only took care of the eggs one time when Tuuli was away and it was only for 8 minutes at her longest break.

Image

It was beautiful weather, sunshine an a not too strong wind. Birds are singing all around Tuuli right now, while she is asleep.

Today was day 43 of the incubation periode and for the 2nd egg it was the 40th day.
Today NOT only the viewers were excited  but Tuuli and Remo also. It seems that they feel one of the eggs is near to hatch and the food brought in by Remo was not eaten at once but kept in a storage place at the edge of the nest.

Image

Remo brought Tuuli 9 little mammals, different sizes and species and as a surprise 1 large frog, so prey's in total today 10.

Image

The song Tuuli had every time Remo brought food was moving. They both were very interested in the eggs, and "talking" together many times.

Image

The weather was beautiful, much sun, and a little bit stronger wind towards midday.
Tuuli is on the eggs right now, dozing in the evening sun while many birds are singing around her, as most evenings.
