It's tragic, that this beautiful bird finds not enough place and good conditions for breeding in germany.

In Germany there are only very few LSE-pairs. The Nabu has now started a project. The site is in German.
There are still around 100 breeding pairs in Germany. That it has become no less is already a first success of our work. Nature gives us the chance to double the brute success. Because the second-born chick dies normally in the nest. But we take it carefully, parachute it in a secret breeding station and the young eagles just before the bird migration.
Part 2 of our rescue plan is to secure the train paths and the habitat. Power lines must be secured, new sites for life-threatening wind farms must be changed, and hunting for migratory birds must be stopped. And we ensure breeding and hunting areas for all time by buying them.

Thanks Felis silvestris and Biker. These are interesting articles.
The Nabu has a train routing card online. At the moment, it is not up to date because it is spring. I follow the whole project very interested.Surely, when the journey begins, the map will update

The map shows the autumn route, but starts at the German-Polish border. The breeding grounds in Germany are to remain secret.

Horst protection for the lesser spotted eagle
January 23, 2018 Andreas KinserWissen
The number of lesser spotted eagle has stabilized at a low level in the state of Brandenburg in recent years. Torsten Langgemach from the bird protection bureau Brandenburg opposite the Märkische Oder newspaper. In Brandenburg, more than 20 breeding pairs of Clanga pomarina breed for over 10 years every year, in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, however, just under 100. Overall, in Brandenburg except the black stork increase the number of other large birds such as sea eagle and eagle owl in the woods , One reason for Langgemach is also the special horst protection, which was already introduced in the 1960s. Among other things, it stipulates that no wood may be used within a radius of 100 meters and that no machines may be used up to 300 meters around a nest between February and August.

Unknown perpetrators destroyed a lesser spotted eagle nest south of Stralsund. The nest was located west of the Borgwallsee and south of Zimkendorf and it is unclear whether there was a young bird in the nest. A destruction of the nest by natural causes such as a storm could be excluded, the perpetrators must have climbed the nest tree with an elaborate climbing technique.
The Lower Nature Conservation Authority of the Vorpommern-Rügen district is now hoping for eyewitnesses who have observed a car and / or at least one person with ropes in the forest area in question from mid-June. Information on ear destruction can be reported by email to fg44.30@lk-vr or by phone at 03831 357 3101.

The Greater and Lesser Spotted Eagles in the Center of European
Russia
P M Shukov et al 2021 IOP Conf. Ser.: Earth Environ. Sci. 723 022096
Quote: "Abstract. This article presents new data on the number and distribution of the Greater and
Lesser Spotted Eagles (Aquila clanga and A. pomarina) in 9 regions located in the central part
of European Russia. The area under surveys is 415,900 km2. The results of surveys carried out
in the Nizhny Novgorod region (76,900 km2) in 2014-2020 allow us to characterize the level of
underestimation of the Greater Spotted Eagle in the region in previous periods, as well as
estimate the degree of knowledge of the species in adjacent regions and calculate the probable
number of the Greater Spotted Eagle in the study area (about 500 breeding pairs). In the central
part of the Russian Plain, the important areas for the Great Spotted Eagle have been identified,
which are very significant for the species conservation. The activities to protect the Greater
Spotted Eagle are discussed. They should combine the establishment of protected areas and
regulation of nature management aimed at the conservation of breeding habitats. The Lesser
Spotted Eagle expanding its home range rapidly to the east has been shown. The relevance,
great theoretical and practical significance of the study of the Lesser Spotted Eagle population,
developing in the center of European Russia has been demonstrated."

Monitoring of migratory soaring birds in the East African-Eurasian flyway: a review
and recommendations for future steps
Authors:> BEN JOBSON, TRIS ALLINSON, ROB SHELDON, WOUTER VANSTEELANT, EVAN
BUECHLEY, STEFFEN OPPEL & VICTORIA R JONES
Quote:
"INTRODUCTION
The East African-Eurasian flyway represents one of the most important routes for
migratory soaring birds in the world. Each spring and autumn, 37 species of migratory
soaring birds (MSBs) navigate this flyway, with over a million birds passing through
the larger bottlenecks (BirdLife International 2021). These include the entire global
population of Lesser Spotted Eagle Clanga pomarina, the Palearctic populations of Levant
Sparrowhawk Accipiter brevipes and Great White Pelican Pelecanus onocrotalus, and globally
important populations of White Stork Ciconia ciconia and European Honey-buzzard Pernis
apivorus among other species. However, the true scale of migration along the flyway is
presumably much larger than the historically recorded figures, and only through advances
in monitoring can we progress our understanding of this phenomenon. Improved
monitoring would also allow for the detection of population trends, distributional shifts
and phenological responses to climate change."

Which eagles are now driving south
Already in the GDR era, environmentalists recognized that intensive agriculture led to habitat destruction for many animal species. So also for eagles.
Quote:"(...) Probably hardly a dozen spotted eagle breeding pairs breed successfully in our Vorpommern-Greifswald district. In Germany there are around 85 breeding pairs, most of which breed in our federal state. Sibling murder is one of the most important survival strategies of the lesser spotted eagle. Just 100 years ago, this way of life was a sufficient method that today leads the once successful Aar <= eagle> to a dead end. But there is human help from lesser spotted eagle experts also from our state, who work closely with Eastern European ornithologists. This will be reported in the next part."
Yes, and I am looking forward to that second part of the story Norbert Warmbier, author, will publish, I hope I don't miss it!

A (very probably) amazing book on Lesser Spotted Eagles will be published (in German) in Dec 2021 by Dr Thomas Krumenacker:
https://www.amazon.de/-/en/Thomas-Dr-Kr ... 3954163489
Google translation:
https://www-amazon-de.translate.goog/-/ ... tr_pto=nui
Quote: "Wherever Germany's last lesser spotted eagles live, nature is doing well. The imposing birds breed in lonely forests and hunt in an agricultural landscape that is not used too intensively. But their living space is becoming scarce. This illustrated book with extraordinary nature photography and scientifically based texts offers spectacular insights into the hidden life of these rare birds. "Kings of the Skies" is also a plea for a change in agriculture and a must for everyone who cares about nature conservation and biodiversity."
About the author, quote:
"As a journalist, Thomas Krumenacker writes about environmental issues in leading media. He has dealt with lesser spotted eagles for two decades, only a few people have spent more time near them: he accompanied them in a glider on the train over Israel and took photos from hiding places in trees in Latvia. With this book he wants to advertise the protection of a bird that is on the road for six months and is just as at home in the Uckermark as it is in the African steppe. "
