We are happy to share exciting news that at least one chick has hatched at the nest where Rutland male S2(15) is breeding in the Netherlands at the Nationaal Park de Biesbosch.
S2 fledged from the Manton Bay nest in 2015 and was first recorded in the Netherlands in 2017 and has spent the spring and summer there ever since. He has paired up with a German ringed female, and they have successfully raised chicks since 2020.
We would also like to say a huge thank you to Rob Braat for allowing us to share these amazing photos he took 📷

33(11) has recently been putting on a show for our visitors and has been fishing in front of Waderscrape and Shallow Water Hides. One of our visitors, Tony Esposito, has very kindly allowed us to share these fantastic photos he took of 33(11) diving into the water! 🦅

The Manton Bay chicks are now 5 weeks old and it won't be long until they are ready to be ringed by a fully licenced and experienced ringer, which happens when they are approximately 6 weeks old. During the ringing, various other measurements are taken, such as weight, to help determine if the chicks are male or female - exciting times ahead! 🦅

The one that got away! A fish delivery to the nest that didn't quite go according to plan - both adults look indignant as the pike manages to escape!

The three youngsters will soon be taking their first maiden flights. All of them were wing flapping yesterday - not sure Maya appreciated it though!

The three Osprey chicks were ringed and measured this morning at Manton Bay. This year we have three females with colour ring numbers 1H1, 1H2 & 1H3. Everything went really well, and a detailed blog post will be available later today.

Nearly taking flight! One of the youngsters 1H3(22) was really taking advantage of the blustery weather today as she took some tentative hops off the nest.

Early this morning, one of the youngsters 1H1(22) fledged. She took off, flew across the bay and landed safely in the nearby trees.
Now she has left the nest for the first time, she will continue to take short exploratory flights nearby, growing in confidence each time. She will stay here until she migrates in late Summer.

A quick update on 1H1(22) - she returned to the nest this afternoon and made a successful landing. More 'helicoptering' from the other youngsters today - they should be fledging soon too.

Around midday yesterday, 1H3 decided to take flight from the nest to the camera perch, a short trip to stretch her wings. She has been taking further flights since then.

Another maiden flight with 1H2 leaving the nest this morning (she may have flown earlier - apologies if our timings are wrong)! All three youngsters have now taken their first flights, but they will still return to the nest throughout the summer.

The juveniles have all been gaining confidence and practising their flying around the bay, though it's clear that they might need a little more work on their landing... Poor Maya!

In our latest blog post, Osprey Information Officer, George Smith, discusses the recent fledgings of the Manton Bay juveniles. Have a read at https://www.lrwt.org.uk/blog/george-smith/leap-faith

This morning, 33(11) brought an early breakfast to the nest, and where there's food, the juveniles are never too far behind...

A small fish delivery from 33(11) to Maya in the nest was enough to tempt two of the youngsters from their favourite perch.

Fantastic footage from the Manton Bay nest this morning showing all sorts of different Osprey behaviour!
1H2(22) starts food begging before 33(11) appears with a trout. 1H2(22) then grabs hold of it and mantles over her breakfast, protecting it from 1H3(22) while 33(11) cleans scales from his beak in the foreground.

SPLASH! 33(11) can be seen in the background fishing then being chased back to the nest by two gulls before successfully handing the perch off to 1H1(22).
