A quick update just to let you know that all three chicks are safe and well after that extraordinary heat. Here, we see 1H3(22) tucking in to breakfast. Her sibling, 1H2(22) has other plans...

Two intruders on the nest today! A black headed gull who we've seen several times recently who has boldly been stealing from the nest and also a juvenile osprey (1H4(22)) who visited from 10:20am until 11:10am.
Rutland Osprey Project
1H4(22)'s parents are 30(10) and HJ8 (who is a female bird from Argyll)

The tug of war rematch! Even though the juveniles are getting more confident with their flying, they still rely on 33(11) to bring them food until they head off on migration.

A possible migration! Here's the last footage from the nest cam of 1H2(22) from 8th August. They haven't been seen in Manton Bay since so it is quite possible that she is the first of our juveniles to leave on migration

A second migration? This is the last footage we have of 1H3(22) from last Friday. When do we think 1H1(22) will set off?

Intruder on the nest! Watch how 1H1(22) defends the Manton Bay nest against this intruding juvenile. Bonus points if you can tell us which juvenile it is that's intruding!

UPDATE ON 1H2(22)
1H2(22), the first of the Manton Bay juveniles to migrate was seen at Frodsham Marsh (a popular birding site in north west Cheshire) on Saturday 27th August. She has been seen with fish so we know that she is still eating - it will be interesting to see where she goes from there!

1H1(22) was last seen by our volunteers on Sunday (29th), and so we believe she has now also left on migration. With that all three juveniles have now left the safety of Manton Bay and we will have to wait and see whether they return to have broods of their own in the coming years. Here is the last footage we have of 1H1(22) from Saturday...

We can now confirm that Maya and 33(11) have now left on migration (as of the 1st and 3rd September respectively) and Manton Bay is sans Osprey once more. Here's the last clip we have of Maya on the nest this year...

UPDATE ON 1H1(22)
1H1(22), the last of the Manton Bay juveniles to fledge this year, has been seen on migration yesterday in Portugal. That means she has travelled an astonishing 1688km (at the least - we cannot confirm the route she has taken) since she left Manton Bay on 29/08/2022. As she isn't radio tracked, we rely on sightings for updates, so it is fantastic to get an update on her location. Photo credits: Carlos Miguel

The new chicks – one male, one female – are the offspring of 4K, a ringed male bird born at Rutland Water in 2013, and an unringed female osprey, thought to be from Scotland. 4K is fitted with a satellite tag, allowing the wildlife charity Conservation Without Borders to monitor his 3,000-mile migration to Guinea in west Africa each autumn and his return trip in the spring. One of the chicks has already migrated and the second is expected to migrate soon.

After circling the nest a few times, an unringed juvenile was seen landing on the Manton Bay nest. If you look at the juvenile's chest, you can see that the breast-band has a lot of dark brown colouration which suggests that this is a female. The fact that she is unringed indication that it is likely a Scandinavian or Scottish Osprey that is stopping briefly on her migration.
