11:25 am She is just beautiful
6:41 p.m. LGL is back
She lands behind the hill and slowly comes up. She greets her chick extensively. Unfortunately, a not so nice Red also hovers in. LGL clacked loud, a black on her right side supports her. Nevertheless, Red plucked downy feathers from the chick. at 18:47 he leaves the place and LGL can feed her chic

Little Princess has to tell a lot... she is talking all time :-)
After that, she covers her chick more or less successfully. 22:46 she is still with her chick!
2:01 p.m. A Red flies in. He is playing parenting. RoyalCam Chick is totally relaxed.

Now she's acting like I know from Pippa. She is hungry and can't wait to be fed. She tells a lot. It sounds incredibly cute. I like that voice

Royal Albatross~The pin feathers are itchy~8:43 am 2021/03/11
The girl is standing on her paddles! Wingersizes & Stretching ~10:58 am 2021/03/11
She is making good progress. She stands, not for long, her feathers are too heavy , pin feathers can already be seen on her wing edges.

18:48 Parent has arrived. He is feeding the fluffy Princess. It's LGL
19:02 LGL leaves her chick
Little Princess went to sleep. She must be tired. The night are not stress less for her.It gets scared every now and then and clatters its beak. It is mostly only rabbits that eat near them. Last night it was a bit better. She awakened only three times.

Kia ora koutou (hello everyone)
For those who are interested, LGK and LGL also have their GPS tracking locations on this albatross tracker page where you can play the flight path. It is not as current as the link in the Meet the Royal family page but it helps to see the path better where multiple lines are crossing each other.
https://docnewzealand.shinyapps.io/albatrosstracker/
Click on the Interactive Map tab to find the maps, this contains all albatross tracker so scroll down to select LGK or LGL
Here is the map for LGK and LGL only.
https://my.wildlifecomputers.com/data/m ... 139976bcfe
In other news only 1 of the 33 chicks has not entered the post guard stage.
Today the Royalcam chick is 49 days olk. It is around this time that the growing down needs a lot of preening, the feathers are at the base of each piece of down and will develop over the coming months. Some mild panting this morning due to the sunny, calm day and the activity of preening.

Hi Liz,
Thank you for the links - they do not work - it says 'server not found' for both of them.
I saw as well that she gets scared every now and then and clatters her beak. As you say, luckily mostly only rabbits that eat near her.

Kia ora koutou (hello everyone)
Today marks day 51 for the Royalcam chick, she was weighed twice today to obtain the post feed weight by LGL this morning. She is now 4.2kg and was fed 300g by LGL. The Track the Chicks weight graph has been updated.
https://www.doc.govt.nz/nature/native-a ... ks-weight/#
A second feeding just after 4pm this afternoon will have pushed the weight up a little again.
We still have one last chick that is still being brooded by the parents
It appears that we have lost power on the headland right at this time also. this is something that can happen during high winds like we have been experiencing today. The power should be back on shortly and the live stream will be back.
Tracking Data
Check out this link to see where LGK and LGL have been over the last 7 days. The first location is no longer on the headland as they were not on the headland 7 days ago. A weeks worth of data will be shown here to declutter the tracking lines and make it easier to see which direction that they are heading in.
We still have one last chick that is still being brooded by the parents
https://my.wildlifecomputers.com/data/m ... 139976bcfe
The entire data set for the tracking data can be found here on the albatross tracker shiny app.
https://docnewzealand.shinyapps.io/albatrosstracker/ (This app is not reliable in Internet Explorer)
Click on the Interactive Map tab and Choose a Bird. There are a lot to choose from but you can find LGK and LGL if you scroll down past the Northern Royals from the Chatham Islands. This page is updated once a week but has the advantage of being able to play the 'flight path' as shown by the trackers.
Note that the trackers upload a data point every 40 minutes during the day. The night data of one point every 2 hours is stored until the solar panel is operational during the day. Albatross do not fly in straight lines so this is an approximation of how far that they have travelled.

Royalcam chick Weight
Today the Top Flat Royalcam chick is 58 days old and weighs 3.8kg. This is slightly below expected weight for this age and several other chicks are in the same position. There will be a reweigh of these chicks on Friday and potential supplementary feeding if the weights have not picked up by then.
Fluctuations in weight are a normal part of a growing albatross chicks life and we only supplementary feed when necessary. Later today the Track the Chicks graph will be updated.

About the fishes: kahawai
Māori name: kahawai
Scientific names: Arripis trutta, Arripis xylabion
The kahawai species most people are familiar with (Arripis trutta) is found around the North Island, South Island, Kermadec and Chatham Islands. They mainly occur in coastal seas, harbours and estuaries, and enter brackish water in rivers. The Kermadec kahawai (Arripis xylabion) is found seasonally around Northland.

Weighing and Spraying
Today the Royalcam chick at Top Flat is 65 days old and weighs a very healthy 5.2kg. She may appear big in the weigh basket but is very much bottom heavy. The down is several cm's thick now and makes her look much bulkier than she really is. Feeling snug in the weighing basket reduces stress for the chick.
The heaviest chick, always a male, was 6.5kg this morning, many of the chicks were very healthy weights due to recent windy days with lots of parents arriving. However, we still had 5 chicks that needed supplementary fed by rangers.

Kia ora koutou (hello everyone)
Spraying
Irrigation is turned on when the day is very hot. The sprinkler has two settings moderate and extreme. Sometimes the chicks only need a light spray if it is not too hot for too long in which case hand spraying is used. It is ok for the chicks to be warm and panting for a while and we do not want them to get soaked and chilled.
Foraging areas of LGK and LGL.
Click on this link to see where LGK and LGL have been over the last week. Both parents cam in to feed their chick on Thursday and Sunday (NZT). A massive feed of octopus meant that on Monday when LGK returned again the chick was too full to be interested in more food at that time.
Scroll way down in the Choose a Bird tab to find LGK and LGL. There is now more data in this app. Playing LGK's flight path reveals a lot of foraging not too far from Taiaroa Head with two larger loops to the south. LGL on the other hand had started out with larger trips to the north, some local foraging and a small trip to the south.
Studies of Wandering albatross have shown that male and female albatross have different foraging ranges due to the lower wing loading in the females who can then exploit lighter winds.
What are they eating?
Albatross are scavengers, they eat what they find which is mostly squid after it dies and floats to the surface. Taiaroa Head Northern Royals find a surprising amount of octopus and also some fish.
In case you missed it scroll down in the comments to see LGL attempting to regurgitate an octopus tentacle. It was too large for the chick so LGL swallowed it back down, digested it some more and fed it to the chick later.
Some chicks are not so lucky and the too large piece drops to the ground. Here is a chick from further down the hill on Sunday with a discarded piece of fish in the nest. It was never even meant for this chick. What happened was a neighbouring chick was fed by her mum, this piece of fish was discarded to be then picked up by a black-backed gull. It was too heavy for the gull who then dropped it narrowly missing this chick. I removed it so it would not attract flies, or more gulls.
