Yes, there are so many birds that are worth mentioning and unfortunately get lost in the mainstream...

Let's take this one too...

Look at their migration train. It's incredible what these birds can do.

November 4th

Golden Eagle - Wild Bucovina/Romania

Sad news:
Lucina was found dead on October 31st.
She had no obvious injuries. Investigations will provide more certainty about the circumstances of her death.

I'm so sorry.
It is a shocking and incredibly sad setback for the development of these eagles. Lucina was a strong female.

A wolverine/Gulo gulo visits the feeding area several times and can 'capture' larger pieces of the carcass.

Golden Eagle versus Eurasian Eagle owl
The eagle owl sat on this prey all night. It ate every now and then. In the morning, jays and magpies came. The jays were very respectful. The magpies were also very cautious at first. But then a lot of them came and bullied the eagle owl. It stayed with the prey and sat on it. Then the golden eagle came. A real opponent. The eagle owl starts an attack and tried to defend the prey, but lost. It flew away.

it was a short fight

Good morning everyone, Liz! :2thumbsup:

Yes, the meeting of the 'giants' was inevitably the highlight. And not to be overlooked, it was eagerly awaited by many spectators.

Well, the two of them clarified it through by their body language. Smart enough to avoid physical contact... .

I find it interesting how differently the animals react to the eagle owl.
The jay was first... fluttering around the food carcass at a safe distance and then daring to take a few bites. Under the watchful gaze of the eagle owl, who sat aside.
Great tits fluttered up in the branches, not daring to go.

The magpies almost got on my nerves. What intrepid cheeky badgers! :rotf:
They plucked the eagle owl's feathers and flew straight at him. They could probably feel safe. From this position the eagle owl would not have caught any of them.

They harassed their big supposed food rival and hunter of their kind.for over half an hour...

Petolintulive Cam
Polly was wondering why the Eagle Owl spends so much time sitting - i.e.: guarding the prey/the carcass. In today's YT-chat - thank you! - Alekseijs Saripins offered an interesting explanation which I would like to quote:

GT:
Most likely, the eagly owl is a young girl with no experience, and in the first days you could see that she was very inactive. It means that it was difficult for her to eat. Usually, owls visit feeders
4:47PM Alexei Sharipin When there are difficulties.
It should be remembered that the eagle owl is a distinctly nocturnal bird. If everything is fine with experience, then he can successfully hunt birds at such feeders. This is the case where there is no experience and the bird "guards" all the time.
4:52PM Alexeys Sharipin "His" food,
4:53PM Alexei Sharipin Now, when his strength is more or less recovered, the bird rests during the day."

Polly, thank you :2thumbsup:

today the Wolverinne has cut up the prey. S/he brings large pieces of it in her pantry
S/he is really a powerful animal! :headroll:

Polly, BTW: Lucina- I've read it in the forum! But thank for bringing it here  It is a great misfortune that Lucina was found dead. It could be that, since she appears unharmed, she ate the remains left behind by the hunters. Lead is still used. Even in parts of Germany. Unfortunately, also here, in the eagle country of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

Oh..that'so sad -:(
Internal bleeding is a sign of poison, some hunters put poison in baits to get rid of all "competitors", or it could be rat poison.
Lead poisoning on the other hand is a slow torture process with disorientation, motoric, not able to get food and finally crawling in under a bush to give up

Polly was wondering why the Eagle Owl spends so much time sitting - i.e.: guarding the prey/the carcass. In today's YT-chat - thank you! - Alekseijs Saripins offered an interesting explanation which I would like to quote:
Yes, actually. Staying pretty exposed in daylight... that was strange, wasn't it?

I have often wondered whether it could be a young animal. Just this dancing grasping with a lot of wing work, balance. And always hitting the “prey” again. This is seen so often in young birds (in my case Goshawk). But I wasn't sure. I can't tell the age of a Bubo bubo by its plumage. So I'd rather not say anything.

Just a few examples:

Thank you Susanne for sharing the post here. I read it yesterday too. But not translated...a chat in sometimes 5 languages is too much for me - I'm leaving.
And thanks especially @Alekseijs Saripins!

Liz, yes!
The wolverine has completely cleaned up. And with what greed... he sometimes shook the prey to death again.

But now there was new food. Thanks to @Luontolive :innocent:
Image

No bubo bubo - yet.
And I still miss a few things - the goshawk, snow - and mice!
Where are the mice and brown rats? They are actually pretty safe at every feeding station and are good food for owls, foxes (also not seen yet) etc. ...

@sigge, I'm absolutely thrilled to read you again!!!!! :loveshower:
Even if the circumstances are unpleasant.

I ask you or any of you all to maybe post it here if you find out anything new? It would be nice!

Well, I wasn't primarily thinking about poisoning. But you could both be right. Unfortunately.

At first I only saw the immediate. Lucina's death and the simultaneous takeover of the nest by the very young but strong female. Btw...a strange male eagle also appeared. I suspected turf wars. An uncontrolled flight from Lucina with an awkward impact. What can do more harm on the inside than can be seen on the outside.

speculations.
I now let people do what they are good at and continue to limit myself to bewilderment. Even if I wasn't the 24/7 viewer of the nest - it hits me.
