Problems with Connections?

Post by Jo UK »

Inevitably, there will be technical problems during the course of a year. Sometimes, it is just one webcam that switches off for a short time. Sometimes, it is a long-term difficulty that can't be corrected with the press of a button but requires a visit to the camera location and replacement of equipment.

When there is a technical problem with Looduskalender equipment (for example, cameras, server, or software), those who are responsible for these services are usually the first to know about it. Most likely, they are already working to correct any problems before we in the forum even realise that something is wrong.

Please do not send emails - it will only slow everyone down if they have to take time to read and respond to dozens of emails.

You can post here if you notice a problem, and we will post here when there is news.

Here is a useful tool if you want to check if a website is "down", or if your computer is misbehaving

"Karu" is the camera-name for the Alutaguse Bear Cam.

There seem to be problems with this forum software. For instance, searching posts in the Grey Seal forum may lead to Kasmu forum!

Webmaster has been informed and we will post news of progress, as it appears.

this mystery has been solved. in winter 2011 the Seal camera stopped working first due to lack of sunshine and then later because a wild boar had landed on the seal island and had chewed the camera cables.

while the Seal camera was unoperational forumists began posting pictures from Käsmu maritime museum instead, as compensation of the missing sea view. thus the Käsmu topic in a way grew inside the Grey Seal topic in the winter/spring 2011. at that time the Käsmu web-camera was not yet an official Looduskalender camera.

it was no use to go back to the seal island to fix the camera while the wild boar was there, and so no-one knew if and when the Seal camera would be restored. the Käsmu-camera, on the other hand, had become so popular that it was officially included in the LK-cameras. therefore also the title of the topic was changed from Grey Seal Webcam Forum to Käsmu Seashore Webcamera Forum in September 2011.

Several streams not found today. Is it the cams or the power or any other problem in Estonia?

Thought the seal cam was on, or at least the winter feeding cam?

Happy new Year everyone :) :loveshower:

Happy new year to you too, Amsel67!

Unfortunately neither the seal cam is working, nor the WtE nest cam (Saunja) - which is not getting enough day light, as it seems.

An eagle winter feeding cam we won't get this year, the feeding at Nõva had to be stopped and though Urmas and friends have been searching, so far they have not found a feeding ground that meets all necessary requirements.
At the moment the boar cam and Käsmu are the only working LK cams.

The present state of cameras can be seen here:

Thanks a lot for the information, Felis.

..had to be stopped...??? Is a bird virus the problem? do you have any further information? Or it might "just" be a technical or financial problem. Wasn't there a lack of food for the eagles?

No, the exact reasons were already stated by the end of last season.

Feeding is no longer allowed at that particular place. If you followed last season, you should have read it somewhere.

i looked up some answers, too, about the eagles' winter feeding place.
it seems that Renno told us about need of changing places first time on March 8th:
viewtopic.php?p=209074#p209074

and again on March 24th:
viewtopic.php?p=213655#p213655

Urmas told more details of why the old winter feeding place cannot be used anymore on Nov 18th:
viewtopic.php?p=285208#p285208
i'll make a quote of his post:
On 18 Nov 2013, 22:58 Urmas wrote:The main issue with eagles feeding is that wild animals should not be dependent of human care. Means not to feed eagles many years in the same place. Eagles are not farming birds, they need to manage without of us, whatever conditions are in their environment. If we feed them continuously, they loose their natural habits and could easily fall out because of natural selection or become problematic for other wildlife.
Congregation of many eagles disturbs also local breeders, especially in near spring time. The ravens dis-balance the wild areas if numerous (most of those are non breeding individuals, not necessarily teenagers).
And finally the place stays quite bad smelling and dirty all over the summer after continuous winter feeding.
So temporary feeders are possible, but mainly then for ring readings or other research. WtE population does not need our care in that way nowadays, rather it is unfavorable in wide scale.
Fortunately only few eagles turned addicted to our feeder up to last year, so it was really last time to finish there. We all wish to watch the eagles through cam, read the rings, etc., nevertheless to care about the eagles means also to leave them as natural as possible.
Please remember our motto - be an observer, as much as possible without of intervention! About eagles feeder it works in wider scope.

We can't say ... that depends on the "5th season" actually taking place, and the camera being started or put up again. The topic for it will be updated then.
