I signed

I posted a link to this thread in the owls around the world thread.

I will post in my collection of nature pictures where I have posted a picture of the Pot Plant Owl. I doubt that will do much but it might get a signature.

Call for action against illegal bird trapping in Cyprus

TENS OF THOUSANDS of migrant birds are being illegally slaughtered in Cyprus annually to feed an appetite for illegal “ambelopoulia” delicacies. Trappers using limesticks and mist nets are making huge profits while threatening Europe’s natural heritage. You can help generate the political will to end this indiscriminate killing by signing BirdLife Cyprus’s petition to relevant Ministers.

Bird trapping in Cyprus has been taking place for many years. It began as a way of supplementing what was once a meager peasant diet. This is no longer the case. Trapping in Cyprus has become a large-scale, high-tech, lucrative business run by criminals. Trapped birds are usually supplied to restaurants that are illegally serving them - a dozen of trapped birds could be sold up to 80 euros. The competent authorities estimate this illegal business to be of the order of 15 million euros per year. The large scale and non selective nature of illegal trapping in Cyprus constitutes an ecological disaster.

A recent film made by BirdLife Cyprus gives an overview of the trapping issue
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Kk4B4YJWiQ
and one other film from another organization shows how far the trappers are willing to go to protect their illegal business
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7KvpoLNEeDg

395 587 THIS NUMBER represents the BirdLife Cyprus estimate for how many birds have been slaughtered by trappers using mist nets and limesticks between September 1st and September 18th 2011.
Please sign the petition! It is extremely important to gather as many signatures as possible! (read more about here:

For those of you who signed petition re: Elephants in Toronto Zoo
Thanks to people like you, Iringa, Thika and Toka, the Toronto Zoo's aging African elephants, will soon be grazing in the fields of the beautiful PAWS Sanctuary in California.

On Tuesday night, in response to thousands of signatures, phone calls, and emails, Toronto City Council reaffirmed their commitment to moving the elephants by voting 32 to 8 in favour of the move. And Bob Barker, our good friend and animal advocate, is still supporting the move.

Over 26,000 people signed our petition on Change.org asking Toronto City Council to vote to move the elephants to PAWS. 26,000 people recognized that seven elephants had died at the zoo prematurely. 26,000 people recognized Toronto doesn't have a good climate for elephants. And 26,000 people said we need to put Iringa, Thika and Toka's welfare first.

And now, Iringa, Thika and Toka get to leave this forever: (photo of cold, barren cement enclosure)

Zoocheck has been campaigning for the welfare of these elephants for two years. In October 2011, Toronto City Council actually did vote to move the elephants, but the Zoo fought the decision and managed to delay the move, eventually forcing it back to the city council for a second vote. But because of the support of Change.org users at a crucial moment, the city council was able to stand up this week, and say enough is enough.

Thank you, on behalf of Irgina, Thika, Toka and all of us at Zoocheck,

Julie Woodyer

Campaigns Director, Zoocheck
All that thanks to Change.org :headroll: ....

For those who have worried & signed the petition...you have been heard.1st the govt. put the order to kill the elephants (supposed to suffer from Tuberculose) on hold.
Now the 'problem' has been solved once and for all.
Princess Stephanie of Monaco will transfer the elephants to the 'Wildlife Park,Monaco' as soon as all the documents are ready. She has asked for a little while to put in a suitable enclosure for the two elephants.
There may be a problem as the royal Animal Park is in fact in French terrritory.
If all that works Stephanie will have the pair tested and treated. :2thumbsup: and get them out of solitary confinement.
