OCTOBER 11th

Yesterday I spent hours watching the 2 beauties :loveshower: :loveshower:

Both were branching on the large trunks; they were jumping up and down. It looked wonderful!!

In the last years this couple of parents suffered so much and the seasons ended at egg stage or by accident. This time we have a strong and healthy eaglets who will leave us very soon. Happy for Aussies and for the excellent parents :thumbs: :bow:

Much drama at the nest today! SE24 fledged (11:28), returned to the nest (15:13), got chased (or knocked) out again by a magpie (15:33) and ended up on the ground defending himself from a fox! :shock: You can still catch the first 3 events on rewind, and there's video of the fox incident (from the second cam) plus updates and commentary on EagleCAM's FB page. And a fledge video is already out there:



SE23 spent the day quietly, and got all the food. :rolleyes:

All was so peaceful til now...but no season without a drama there. Hopefully the youngster is not injured. :slap:

update on their FB-page:
13th October, 2019 7:27pm Quick update. Those watching would know of the events that unfolded this afternoon following SE24's first flight and return to nest. A magpie swooped knocking him off the nest and he ended up on the ground, where a fox was circling him.

One of our fantastic ground obs people Rohan along with two of the Sydney Olympic Park rangers managed to scare off the fox.

SE24 appears uninjured. He flew to a spot about one metre off the ground then moved to another one, three metres above the ground. We will keep an eye on him. More later.

SE24 was found around 10:30 AM local time 14.10. in the same tree he was last seen in the evening. As he had not returned to the nest a few people went looking for him at about 10:00. They first reported that he was not in the same place as in the evening. Later they spotted him well hidden in the same tree.

Here's video (again courtesy of Lady Hawk) showing the combined magpie & currawong harassment that finally (and literally) pushed SE23 over the edge :rolleyes:



At least one of the seaglets was reported flying in the area later in the day on 10/16. Whether or not either will return to the nest remains to be seen.

5th November, 2019 - Some really sad news for everyone today.

One of our juvies, likely SE23, has been found dead by bird survey people, in the reserve (on the old disused railway track).

Judy has taken the body to Taronga for necropsy. She will post more information later today.

SE24 has been seen today with parents at the river.

Yeah, very sad, especially since it had been such an unusually successful season so far. The latest news is that the necropsy showed no sign of injury or disease. So it's likely that SE23 perished simply from lack of adequate food. :unsure:

It's so incredible sad to read that, poor little SE 23, starved to dead. :cry:
Finally in this season two youngsters fledged, no disease, no siblings rivalry...and now again a tragedy. :bow:
