Buzzard Cam 2 - Katrin and Kalju

There is a second camera on a buzzard nest. The connection created some problems and was not stable, so it went online finally on Monday 9th March.


Estonian ornithologists choose a "Bird of the Year" every year since the year 1995. For the year 2015 they have chosen the Buzzard.
In Estonia 3 different buzzards can be encountered: the Common Buzzard (Buteo buteo), found in Estonian all year round, the European Honey Buzzard (Pernis apivorus) breeding in Estonia during summer and the Rough-legged Buzzard (Buteo lagopus) wintering in Estonia.

The nests are located in Tartumaa, and are almost neighbours. Buzzard nest 2 has a Mobotix M22 camera, a model used earlier at nests with an inbuilt microphone.

We had to wait one week longer to finally see the nest owners for the first time. On Sunday, March 15 in the morning we were rewarded for out patience and met the buzzard pair for the first time.

Eggs:

The typical clutch of the buzzards consists of 2 to 3 reddish-brown to greyish-brown eggs, size 56 × 45 mm and weight 50-60 g.
The eggs are laid with a difference of 2 to 3 days, incubations depending on the size of the clutch. Incubation starts later in a clutch with 3 to 4 eggs than in a clutch with 1 to 2 eggs. Incubation time is 33 to 35 days.

First egg arrived on April 3 around 19:00 EEST
Second egg arrived on April 6 around 11:00 EEST
Third egg arrived on April 9 around 9:00 EEST

Chicks

First chick hatched on May 10 around 6.45 EEST
Second chick hatched on the same day May 10 between 13:00 and 13:30 EEST
Third chick hatched during the night of May 11 to 12


Ringing of the chicks

The chicks were ringed (banded) on June 10 by Ülo Väli.

how you think it is OK, to make conclusions in 1st of April or if first egg will be in nest (e.g. which happens earlier)?

Update: June 1: The buzzard chicks have received names by votes of the forum members:

The oldest chick is called: Boss
The middle chick is called: Kaile - name switched to Kaile, after DNA test showed it's a female bird
And the youngest chick is called: Kulla

This nest was built in 2012 and found by Ülo Väli but the territory has been occupied at least since 2009. The nest is in a birch tree at around half-way(or slightly below half-way) to the top of the tree. No official measurements have been made but my rough estimation is that the nest is at around 14 meters off the ground.
Back in 2009 the nest was on a spruce tree with at least 1 juvenile in the nest and possibly another juvenile already out of the nest. We have no information about 2010. In 2011 a new nest in a spruce tree was found, also by Ülo, and 2 nestlings were ringed in the nest that year. In the winter between 2011 and 2012 part of the forest where the nest was located was cut down. The buzzards had started building a new nest in 2012 in a birch tree which is the nest we see in the camera. That year no eggs were layed in the nest. In 2013, 2 nestlings were ringed in the nest. Likewise, in 2014, 2 nestlings were ringed in the nest.
As we know, neither Katrin or Kalju have rings and I don't recall any ringed buzzards ever being spotted on this territory either.
A small road is quite close to the nest so from time to time one may hear cars driving by.

I have the thumbs-up from Urmas to make this nest camera public now too. When they installed the technical equipment last week there was buzzard "activity" too. We will see if and when somebody will appear on the nest. Hopefully soon.
