JUNE 24.

Both Eaglets have left the nest and are sitting on branches close to the nest.
Earlier in the morning D 102 was seen flying from the nest tree to another tree nearby.
This is accepted as the first flight. 102 is 75 days old today - 101 is 77 days old.

June 25.

06.30 One of the eaglets makes a bad landing by flying from one tree to another and has maybe fallen to the ground.

101 (I guess) doing flying drills, at. 06:30 she flies away from the nest (within the camera's field of view) and she then increases to land on a vertical tree trunk. Of course it does not work, and when she realizes it she flies back towards the nest, but comes below the level of the nest. What happens next happens outside the camera's field of view.

So here we are

10.08
The male lands in the nest with food at about 10:08. He is clearly confused that the nest is empty. Looks around a lot.

Comment bu Ole F. Larsen to the current situation:

The cubs can easily survive on the ground
Written by Ole Friis Larsen on 25 June 2022 at 12.15
The nest is perfectly located in an area with lots of food, but nature is just as dangerous to birds as a big city is to humans. There is a lot that can go wrong.

When it is mentioned, the two eaglets can easily survive on the ground if they end up there. It is quite common for eaglets.

We also saw the other day that a Polish eagle cub managed a crash from a nest at a height of 26 meters. They can at least use the wings as parachutes, if nothing else.

They do not have many enemies on earth. Foxes and dogs should probably stay away if the cubs show claws, or they can scare most people away just by flapping their wings and looking very large.

We do not know where the two eaglets are right now, and we will, as also mentioned earlier, prefer not to disturb more than is absolutely necessary. For us, there is nothing that immediately seems alarming.

Although it looked violent and looked like a crash this morning, it is far down to the ground and the kid has had plenty of room to get in position for a harmless landing.

Once the chicks have flown from the nest, it quickly becomes the norm for the parent birds to bring food to them on the ground. When the adult / adult eagle took the prey from the nest, it was perhaps precisely to deliver it to the young down to earth.

After a walk in the area, I can state that an old and a young eagle are sitting at the edge of the forest about 130 meters from the nest, so one of the young has moved away from home. I did not see the other, but I wonder if it is sitting nearby.
I'm going for a ride again tonight.

June 26.

07.32 Male arrives with a chicken of a Coot i one claw.
Removes feathers from the pray and eats the head of it.
Male is often looking around.
Maybe in search for one of the eaglets?

07.38 Male flies out with the pray in the beak.

Image

The Eaglets have not come back to the nest yet.
Male brought an Eel in the evening and Femmale arrived, but was rejected by Male.
Male flew out with the Eel and came back to the nest without the eel.
A stranger was also around the nest.

Trouble

The male came with an eel and tried in vain to call the young until the nest-female arrives and it is probably natural that he screens off as the eel was not for her. could clearly hear them screaming. nearby, so that probably just means they take good care of their cubs

A comment from Ole F Larsen about young eagles and their travels in the landscape around the nest. And where they settle down later on:
---
Written by Ole Friis Larsen on 1 July 2022 at 17.19
It is true that there are often quite a few younger eagles at the Maribo Islands. The same is true at Hyllekrog, where the ØrneTV nest is, and at Rødsand next to Gedser on Falster.

'Romme's GPS tracks show that this whole area must be seen as a whole. When 'Romme' seems to be moving throughout the area, all the other young eagles most likely do too. There is probably a daily exchange of eagles between localities on Lolland and Falster such as Rødsand, Maribosøerne, Saksfjed-Hyllekrog, Kaløgrå and Bøtø to name a few of the most important local nature areas, where several eagles are often seen together.

It is natural for males to search back to the area they come from, so 'Romme' behaves completely 'after the book', while females tend to settle further away. There have been no GPS transmitters on the two sisters from this year, but you can see the trend in other females with GPS transmitters - not only Danish, but also in other countries.

D102 is having some leftovers for dinner. A leg from a duck is splitted and eaten.

17.50 - D102 is leaving the nest.
