HANS NATUURKANAL, little owl

January 4th

Last night (21:28 - 37) and tonight (01:11 - 15) the couple visited Joan's nesting box again, so great!
There was squeaking and the nest hole was dug.

Cute!

Another owl cam that could probably be very promising.
Bella and Copper have been breeding here since 2019 (known). Last 3 chicks in 2021, 3 flown out in June.

I think we see Bella here already visiting the box.

Changing camera views, good picture. Also with an outside camera and sound.

HANS NATUURKANAAL
(In the newer streams the spelling has been changed to HANS NATURKANAL. But not everywhere ... I'm confused, the old spelling will be kept for now.)

The new outdoor camera has now been installed and offers a view of the comings and goings.
No guest is now invisible. Often there are also squirrels at the box.

The female remains loyal to the box. :innocent:

Thanks to the outside camera, she could also be seen in the tree this morning (07:42) before she flew into the pits a few minutes later.

No further visits to the Tawny owls in the other box at @Lieke (streamed via HANSNATUURKANAAL).

And also the little owl at @joan (streamed via HANSNATUURKANAAL) seem to be taking a break.
However, yesterday morning at least one could be heard and must have sat on the box for a few minutes.

Yeah, it goes on for the little owl in the Netherlands. :loveshower:

This morning (I think) the male visited the box again. Very engaging, very cute ... of course. Little owls are easy to love.

Here in Schleswig-Holstein they get their own projects, this species is rare.

07:44 - 47 Visiting the box with invitations and testing the nest template.

I miss the presence of the female little owl but I interpret the behavior of the male so that the female is also nearby.
Just a feeling. :innocent:

Bella is also loyal to her box. :innocent:
And here, too, I've never seen or heard her partner live. But that doesn't mean anything yet.

What can I say ... Bella is a female of a thousand faces.
The camera is amazingly good. You can see every fluff ... every fiber of a feather and its minimal changes during its perception and mood. I somehow already have a hundred screenshots of Bella and my fascination doesn't end.

Question to you:
Does a female bring her prey to a nest outside of the active breeding season? :puzzled:

I assumed only males do it to bind the female.
Today as well:
Bella? with a little bird

Reliable, of course. :innocent:
Arrival 07:03 local time. That is where the day begins, while mine slowly ends.

Let's say it's Bella. She seems a bit restless, leaves the box again at 07:04.

Yes, back in 07:17.
I don't know what she forgot outside.

Image

Puffed up ...

I was hoping she would return with loot. That a male screeching owl is nearby giving a present. Maybe it was like that and I just didn't hear it.

There is a backyard camera.
https://youtu.be/i_kQj0lHdNg

I only discovered it today. With activity timestamps, it's easier to watch out for movement there.

Good evening everyone!

Trük Meister - Screech Owls, Utah/USA

Today I was actually a little nervous ... nothing happened.
The outside camera or backyard camera is not that attractive to me. The incubator is completely in the glaring light and yesterday I tried for a long time (with absolute time stamps) to find movements there - nothing. Or I'm too stupid. This option is of course also available.

07:16:44 yes, there it is! The typical croak of a female owl.
I winded three times because I hadn't heard anything before ... no hint, no rustling ... Bella seems to have been sitting there for a while? Anyway, nice to hear. :innocent:

07:18:14 Movement outside and invisible. It can be anything - take-off, landing or just a change of position.

07:19 ... and in.
There are people who pay a lot of money for car headlights "evil eye" - Bella has taken the look. :whistling:

Image

Slowly sleepy and what strikes me - her throat area (position of the feathers) looks like she is calling. You can see it very well in owls! But there is no sound.
Image

I will continue to follow Bella and her story intensively on a daily basis (and where is Mr. Copper) but will not add any more here for the time being. It doesn't make sense if there is little interest.
I may continue when an active breeding season begins.
Even if I would prefer wild / natural nests (like Latvian Bubo Bubo) it is a good meeting place with excellent camera.

HANS NATUURKANAAL

Little Owl ,the nest box is provided by @Joan.

There is also an update here.
Additional outside camera, really an asset! Without sound but very nice to see the little owl outside the box.

Visited yesterday evening:

Last night:

Image

I think the male. In front of the box 03:41 - 47. It was sitting, looking around and quickly flew away after observing something above itself.
Seen again flying below the box at 03:48:22. Possibly on the hunt.

Little Owl

Here we go further.
I can now say that this is a completely new pair. Both males and females have chosen this nesting box for the first time and are strengthening their bond. They have been appearing very reliably for a few days.

A video posted by @Joan, who is also streaming on their premises - January 17th

Liz :hi:
For my understanding I have to ask: Isn't this nest actually an Osprey nest? :puzzled: I think I've covered the owls a number of times over the past year, starting a romance there in the absence of the Osprey (through migration).

Or is it another nest?

Then the owls would have established themselves after all, which will not please the resident Osprey when they return.
