Estonian Osprey Nest ~Mai & Mikk~ (P&M) DOCUMENTATION 2015

Post by Bea »

We are happy to have this nest cam for a fourth season, hoping for successful breeding.

This topic is for documentation of what we see on the nest only
1) Something that you saw yourself on the cam
2) Include the date and time
3) Posts here are meant for a quick review of events.

Comments and discussion should be posted HERE: viewtopic.php?f=56&t=771

Ospreys reach body heights of 50-66 cm, and wingspans of 1,27 - 1,74 m. Females are bigger than males.

- Winglength ♂ 448 bis 495 mm ♀ 470 bis 518 mm
- Weight ♂ 1,12 bis 1,74 kg ♀ 1,21 bis 2,05 kg

Usually two or three eggs are laid and incubated 36-41 days.
Young Ospreys fledge after 50-54 days.

Nest is located in South Estonia, Võrumaa

A fish farm, as well as a river, is not far, so good hunting conditions for Ospreys.

Madis, the male, wears a metal ring on his right ankle, but designation is not readable from cam view.

Piret, the female, wears metal ring on right ankle and on left ankle ring with designation SO
She still has a "backpack", since she was trapped and fitted with a transmitter in 2012, but it was not possible to trap and remove it until now.

Unfortunately breeding seasons in 2013 and 2014 failed on this nest, as there was a female competitor in 2013 (Oxana) and a nest change in 2014.
Please read here more about sad and also failed breeding on the new nest in 2014: http://www.looduskalender.ee/en/node/21290

I managed to catch him on the camera and took this video. He sang beautifully! :loveshower:

The woods are lovely, dark, and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.
