Estonian Tawny Owl Webcam 2016
Introduction in English language on LK main page:
http://www.looduskalender.ee/n/en/node/108
Camera started early this year and some maintenance work is still planned, but of course we are all confident that our Tawny Owl couple Klaara & Klaus will use this nestbox for a new breeding season.
Location is not far from human settlements, so it is normal to hear sounds from passing cars, tractors, lawn mower and even human voices.
We can expect between 2 and 6 eggs, incubation time is 28 to 30 days.
Observations of most previous years showed us, that up to 6 eggs were laid, but that only 2 or 3 owlets will grow up and become branchlings.
Also this year we can´t expect that all hatched owlets will grow up. The owlets which are too small and weak to fight for their share of food and won´t survive this hard competition, will be fed to surviving owlets by the female Tawny Owl.
It is a food source that can´t be wasted, Tawny Owls behaviour can not be measured with our human ethic understanding.
Camera won´t be switched off, things will be shown as they happen in this real wildlife.
Please be aware of this, especially when you watch this cam with your children!

Owls need all their senses for hunting and have a very good developed auditory system - ear openings are covered with feathers and we will hardly see them here on our Tawny owls, but I found two intersting pics in the web:
Ear opening
Some owl species have asymmetrical ear openings, for better hearing

Tawny owl webcam was outside whole autumn and winter. Camera and other parts were ok and we managed to start the webcam 100 km away without going there :) Usually it is necessary to visit the place many times (like now our WTE cam which still have technical problems, hopefully we manage to fix it soon).
Still I will go and clean the lens of Tawny owl webcam and there are also last year food remains in the nestbox - I will clean it for analyzing it and put fresh wood chips for this season´s breeding (fingers crossed!).
Hopefully we will see Klaus and Klaara soon. Local people have already seen them recently. Here in Estonia last weeks have been very warm and they might start breeding already early March.

Hello Renno!
Good to hear that Tawny Owls were already seen around, I am sure they will appreciate your planned maintenance works, without doubt it will be inviting and lure them to the nestbox for another breeding season
Great to have an Estonian Wte cam again! Hopefully technical problems can be fixed and fingers crossed for a successful breeding season there, too
