Est WTE nest 2016: Food items brought to the nest

Food items brought to the Estonian WTE nest 2016
On 09 Mar 2016, 13:28 renno wrote:I write with special request to You all! Estonian Marine Institute ( http://www.sea.ee/en/)
would like to study the Saunja bay fish fauna and compare it with fishes brought to WTE webcam nest - to analyze fish biomass, preference of WTE and also sizes of fishes etc.

Therefore we kindly ask You to register all food items which Uku or Anna will bring to the nest: fishes, birds and all other items.

So far there have been 9 food items and all have been fishes: 6-7 Prassius carps, 1 Pike, 1 Burbot and 0-1 Perch. ...

Thank You very much for Your effort and help!

On 09 Mar 2016, 21:51 renno wrote: ... sometimes it is difficult to see the fish Uku or Anna is bringing or eating. For example today at 15:52 fish wasn´t seen at all but sometimes this happens. Usually while bringing the food it is visible and possible to identify. This is better to see from videos (one good frame in video is usually enough).

If You have opportunity to make videos about bringing the food/fish this is the greatest! Videos might be quite short because best look for fish is while bringing it to the nest. If not possible to make videos then pictures are also ok and if necessary we can check videos later from pontu archive (takes more time). Species of fishes will be checked by Marine Institute people so don´t hesitate to give species names to the fishes
We shall try to fulfill renno's wish and collect in this topic observations of the different food items that are brought to the nest during the season. The topic will be kept locked so that only one observation with preferably a few clear and representative pictures of each prey item with timing and other information will be posted here. For this purpose we shall pick some of the observations reported in the nest topic.
If you don't take pictures then please post verbal reports with as accurate timing information as possible.
These verbal announcements of deliveries are also important because if the time of an event is known then pictures can be taken later from the Pontu recordings. Especially later in the season when eaglets have grown bigger the prey have a tendency of disappearing in seconds so vigilance and attention are required.

Happy hunting!

Both today´s fishes were Prussian carp/Carassius in latin Carassius gibelio and in estonian hõbekoger. First fish catched by Uku was about 1 kg.

Fish day before yeaterday was Burbot Lota lota in estonian luts - this fish is not easy to catch because living in the bottom of the bay. But Anna and Uku have very good fishing area close to their nest as you can see from the webcam

It has a high back and golden/darker scales .... so it is maybe a Crucian Carp (Carassius carassius)

16:06 Eating is over, Anna lays on the egg. Uku is still on the branch.
16:11 Uku took off. A piece of fish skin is on the nest in front of Anna.

it was difficult to see anything else than that it had a tail and was covered with scales.
i made a slow-motion (1/16 of normal speed) silent close-up video of the delivery.

14:21 happened the most extraordinary fish delivery: a young eagle followed Uku who was bringing a fish and stole the fish!

slow video

edit: normal video 0.50 They are flying in the background.
i made an even slower video in close-up of this delivery. this is in 1/8 of normal speed. there one can quite clearly see that the tail of the eagle who carries the fish in is white and that the tail of the stealing eagle is still "dirty".

a frame-by-frame gif of the theaft. it seems that Uku kicked the young eagle on the face. hopefully it didn't get injured.

A little later the male lifted its prey a little. A slow-motion (1/8 of normal speed) close-up video:

The prey seemed to have only black feathers. When the male lifted the prey one can see something which may be a raven's beak (here pointing to the left, upper mandible in the foreground).
