Estonian Osprey Nest (Irma & Ivo) 2017

Post by Bea »

We are looking forward to the fifth season of nestcam observations at this place!

Introduction on LK main page in English: http://www.looduskalender.ee/n/en/node/1230

Nest is located in South Estonia, Tartumaa, not far from a fish farm. Natural river and ponds are in vicinity, too.

Resident couple in 2016 were Irma (U5) and Ivo (ED).
Three eggs were laid, but one got lost when Irma took off from the nest and the egg was still stuck in her chest feathers, it fell into the nest rim.
Two remaining eggs hatched, but the smaller chick was blown off from the nest in a storm, one week after it had hatched.
So only one ospret was raised, it got the name Ivar (RR).

Ospreys reach body heights of 50-66 cm, and wingspans of 1,27 - 1,74 m. Females are bigger than males.

- Winglength ♂ 448 bis 495 mm ♀ 470 bis 518 mm
- Weight ♂ 1,12 bis 1,74 kg ♀ 1,21 bis 2,05 kg

Usually two or three eggs are laid and incubated 36-41 days.
Young Ospreys fledge after 50-54 days.

The woods are lovely, dark, and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,

Nope, no news about it yet, but I suppose that the cams showing nests of our migrating birds will go online now soon, one after the other ...

Oh, I feel so sorry for you, but she had most likely a beautiful life and 20 years for a cat is a long life, but is ever very, very sad to lose a pet.

Oh, the Eagle men already prepared the nest with some nest materials, that's great. Irma and Ivo would be happy about this.
