Hello everyone :hi:

Once more we didn't receive new data from PIKNE

Last data received by GPRS: 2022-06-04 20:26:05 (UTC+3)
Next data session expected tomorrow: 2022-06-07 at 20:26:05 (UTC+3)

I hope Pikne is OK and has crossed the Gulf of Iskenderun by now.

As quite often happens in Syria and Turkey, it seems that the transmitter data have been jammed.
A long back and forth flight (to and from Ankara airport) is visible on the map. Pikne obviously did not make these flights.

This is what I see in OrniTrack:

The next data session for UDU is expected tomorrow morning.
I see that Udu's battery status is (was) 0%. A dead battery! :slap:
He/she cannot send new data until the transmitter's battery is charged, I think.

I do not know how to announce this.

We have very sad news.

Our beloved Pikne has perished in Turkey, in the Nevşehir area.

It happened last night or yesterday evening.

This is heartbreaking.

Urmas has been informed.

Edit, for clarification:
This evening, Pikne's transmitter sent data (after 2 days of silence). Based on that data (no movements, wrong position of the transmitter, flat lines in the XYZ coordinates, transmitted temperatures, etc), it can be deduced that Pikne is dead. Urmas is investigating who and when (and if) someone in Turkey can go in search of Pikne's body and the transmitter. It would be good if the cause of death could be determined.
The most likely cause of death seems to be a collision with power lines. Hopefully, we will know more soon.

This is so upsetting. Pikne had been out of contact for months. Now, just as contact is re-established, this happens.

PIKNE
Hatched in Estonia, Karula National Park, on 28 May 2021
Started its 1st migration on 20 August 2021
Died in Turkey, (probably) on 06 June 2022 in the evening
Total distance flown: 18,500 km

The Death of the Bird

She feels it close now, the appointed season:
The invisible thread is broken as she flies;
Suddenly, without warning, without reason,
The guiding spark of instinct winks and dies.

Try as she will, the trackless world delivers
no way, the wilderness of light no sign,
The immense and complex map of hills and rivers
mocks her wisdom with its vast design.

And darkness rises from the eastern valleys,
And the winds buffet her with their hungry breath,
And the great earth, with neither grief nor malice,
Receives the burden of her death.
Excerpt from "The Death of the Bird" by A.D. Hope

Farewell, Pikne.
I love you.

Pikne's transmitter didn't send any new data today.

A predator or scavenger may have moved or damaged the transmitter.

Yesterday evening the battery status was 73%

Thank you for everything, Anne.
You have chosen a very beautiful poem.

Not that it would change anything..... i noticed that Pikne did cross water on the "normal" route going south, but avoided water crossing on the way north.
Could this indicate that Pikne was traveling north alone, without companions ?

Cute, restless, insatiable Pique... :faint: he was the last of the children to leave the nest ... what happened to you?
Has Urmas managed to find people who will find our chick?

Are there any messages from Udu?

HI, Tatiana60.

Urmas is in contact with bird-friends, who have helped in previous searches. We may not hear the result of that contact until there is an outcome - such as Bird and Transmitter Found or Not Found.

Dear Balistar and Tatiana,

I still cannot look at OrniTrack without getting tears in my eyes.
I am very sorry for you, and for everyone who watched Pikne grow up.

PIKNE
This is a picture posted by you, Tatiana. August 20th, 2021, 8:44 am.
It was taken on the day that Pikne started his/her first migration.

Image

Pikne was definitely meant to survive! S/he flew a perfect route and found a very good wintering place in Ethiopia.
Our wonderful, clever and strong Pikne was snatched from life, in the blink of an eye, shortly after its first birthday.
Most probably by a collision with high-voltage power lines in Turkey!
The same sad and upsetting story, over and over again. How many more precious birds will have to die in this horrible way?!

UDU
For now, there is no more recent news from Udu.
The battery of his transmitter is flat.
Those leg-mounted transmitters don't seem ideal.
The advantage is that they can be fitted quickly and at a young(er) age.
The big disadvantage, however, is that the solar panels are very small, and they don't get much direct sunlight. Especially in hot areas, I think, where BS often poop on their legs to avoid getting a sunburn.

Here is Udu's last known location in the Central African Republic, according to OrniTrack.

The data session of Pikne's transmitter failed again.

Next data session expected: 2022-06-10 20:27:10 (UTC+3)

Thank you for trying to discover at least UDU. To the walkie-talkie on leg - only my consideration. I think that placing the birds on their feet could be difficult for them to rest while lying down and folding their legs. After all, the profile of the transmitter is a bit bulky .. I don't know, I'm not an expert ...

Hello Bigfan

I am not an expert either, but I think all transmitter types have their advantages and disadvantages. And as far as I know, none is completely risk-free.
The leg mounted transmitters that Tuul, Pikne and Udu received are high-tech and well-designed (so as not to bother the birds).
But as already mentioned, their batteries might not be able to recharge fast enough in some circumstances.

I see in OrniTrack that Udu's transmitter keeps trying to send new data every two days. Presumably as soon as the battery is recharged a tiny bit. But the transmitted data is identical to the one in the tracker map I posted on 06.06.2022.
The only difference I can discover is that the graphs in OrniTrack now show the XYZ-accelerometer data up to 10.02. Previously it was up to 04.02, if I remember correctly.
Perhaps some other data were also added.

The last shown location and time is still exactly the same.
And OrniTrack still indicates: battery status: 0%

....
:hi: Hello Anne
Do you really mean Pikne, or Udu?
When the Udu is somewhere in dense forest, the batteries are charged very heavily, besides that, the last few days have been cloudy... my opinion, not a good combination.

Hello Sova

Yes, I meant Pikne. I have no further information about the search for Pikne and the transmitter. Therefore I keep looking at the OrniTrack data, to know if the transmitter is still in that area, and/or if it has been moved or not. But unfortunately the transmitter is no longer sending any data, until now.

As for Udu, the last received data is from February 4th, as you know. S/he could be anywhere by now, I think. The problem seems to be an empty battery. But empty since February? :puzzled:
It’s rather confusing that we continue to receive the same (old) data every 2 days.

I really don’t know, Sova.
I hope that Udu is OK.

We received Udu’s data on June 6, June 8 and this morning, June 10.
So I guess the data were sent on the days mentioned above (and not in February), but are just still (very) incomplete because of the current battery status.

Edit:
Actually, I think Udu is no longer in the Central African Republic. The connectivity is very poor there. As he has (tried to) send data three times in a short time, I suspect that Udu is in a more populated region, with probably better connectivity. Fingers crossed.

June 10th
Pikne's transmitter sent no data.
The only reason I can think of is that either the transmitter has been (re)moved and is currently in a place without GPS coverage, or the transmitter has been damaged/destroyed.

Last data received by GPRS: 2022-06-07 20:27:10 (UTC+3)
Next data session expected: 2022-06-11 20:27:10 (UTC+3)
