Estonian Osprey Nest (Ivo & Iiris) 2019

Post by Bea »

°°°°°°°°°°°
Welcome everybody to the seventh season on this nest!

- - - -

Introduction on LK main page in English: still to come

- - - -

We all hope to see our resident couple Irma (U5) and Ivo (ED) back on this nest, for another successful breeding season.

Nearly every season here had a "drama", also last year, 2018, had its surprise for cam observers.

Irma and Ivo returned home safe and sound, three eggs were laid, no egg was lost by accident, three osprets hatched, no ospret was blown from the nest during a storm, all grew up well and got their ID-rings when they were big enough and then all three osprets fledged.

Unfortunately one of the osprets, Jaak (XJ), somehow managed to get his ring slipped over his left ankle, two of his toes were "trapped" in the ring, see picture below.

Jaak´s slipped ring
Image

Nobody knows how this happened, it happened somewhere outside the nest, out of cam view. For parts of the audience it was not easy to hear and accept that there would be no intervention, as there was no chance to trap this fledgling and release him from the ring. A very unhappy situation on the one hand, not pleasant to watch, but on the other hand it was an unique possibility for ornithologists to observe how things would go on and to draw conclusions, e.g. about ring material and -size, and maybe take changes into consideration.

All came to a happy end, when Jaak could get rid of the ring all by himself, after 8 days living with this mislocated ring.

- - - -

Forum member mogga made a wonderful video, a summary of season 2018

- - - -

Ivo hatched and was ringed in 2013 by Joosep Tuvi, in a nest 50 km NNE in Jõgeva county

Irma was ringed as an adult bird, we don´t know anything about her hatching date

Nest is located in South Estonia, Tartumaa, not far from a fish farm. Natural river and ponds are in vicinity, too.

Ospreys (Pandion haliaetus) reach body heights of 50-66 cm, and wingspans of 1,27 - 1,74 m. Females are bigger than males.

- Winglength ♂ 448 bis 495 mm ♀ 470 bis 518 mm
- Weight ♂ 1,12 bis 1,74 kg ♀ 1,21 bis 2,05 kg

Usually two or three eggs are laid and incubated 36-41 days.
Young Ospreys fledge after 50-54 days.

Statistic from our forum member Sunshine - thank you!
Sunshine wrote: August 10th, 2018, 11:02 am Checked a statistics about when the ospreys were last seen on the nest. Hopefully this year's very warm summer will make them linger a bit more..

For Irma:
in 2013 - she was last sighted on 23 August
in 2014 - 21 August
in 2015 - 19 August
in 2016 - 24 August
in 2017 - 20 August
in 2018 - 26 August

So Irma might presumably start the migration any time from 19 to 24 August. (2018)

Chicks:
in 2013 Kaido last seen on 8 September, Kenno 12 September
in 2014 Elar and Aino were last seen on 12 September
in 2015 Yolanda last seen on 5 September, Niina on 15 September, Thor on 19 September
in 2016 Ivar last sen on 4 September
in 2017 Daimar was last seen on the nest on 27 August and Daisi on 11 September
in 2018 Kaja was last seen on the nest on 3 September, Heli and Jaak on 6 September

So the young osprets can presumably migrate any time from ~ 27 August to 19 September (2018)

The male:
in 2013 Ilmar was last seen on 12 September
in 2014 Ilmar was last seen on 12 September
in 2015 Joosep (J3) last seen on 18 September
in 2016 Ivo last seen on 4 September
in 2017 Ivo last seen on 11 September
in 2018 Ivo last seen on 6 September

So Ivo might presumably start his migration journey any time from ~ 4 September to 18 September
(2018)

Hello and welcome to all osprey fans - the camera was spotted online! :loveshower:

seira and Hellem noticed it first, I´ll leave their posts in last years´ topic, as a "bridge" to the new season here

viewtopic.php?p=640720#p640720

I prepared the new topic already "behind the curtains", it had to wait to come to the light and --- *wwrrroooummmm* ---- now we are ready to start!

In the first posts of this years´ topic you will find all the statistics and lists that were made from forum members during the last seasons, all very good summaries of all the datas that are interesting for us every season.

Thank you all for this good work!
We have a superduper community of active members here, who are contributing to provide such a bunch of informations

Just want to let you know that I got a note from Urmas that he will probably go to the nest once more to clean the camera lense, before ospreys return.

When he was at the nest site today, he saw two White tailed Eagles flying, an adult and a juvenile, maybe they can be seen in cam view again in case they are still in the area.

No worries olgapyat, everybody here in the forum was a beginner once

German saying in English ----> "Practice makes perfect"

I think the nest was shrinking a bit over the winter, like every year, with rain and snow on it. But as soon as one of the ospreys will start working on it, it will become bigger again.

But the corvid looks really huge! It looks as if it wanted to crack a walnut.
