Elm
For city people it is only a matter of looking carefully to notice the flowering of elms in parks and cemeteries, but in our forests it is no longer so. The reason why – elms prefer fertile habitats and such locations have mostly been cultivated. Thousands of years ago the climate was warmer and there were more broad-leaved tree species in our forests. Wood with good properties has always been in demand and so such trees have been cut to be used as wood materials.
Elms flower quite early here but their little yellowish flower tufts are not particularly notieable on the bare twigs.
Eesti Loodus has nominated the common elm and the white elm as this year’s Tree of the Year. We will try to keep an eye on their development.
