Velvet scooters
January 26
This morning I was in Ristna by early dawn. But I stayed for just an hour, there were no particular bird movements to see. Only small numbers of
long-tailed ducks were migrating, also a few loons and
velvet scooters and today’s most exciting bird, a
razorbill.
Steller’s eiders were not to be seen anywhere. The wind had brought a mass of broken ice to the Ristna tip and there were not many stationary birds either. I would not even have stayed for that hour but it was exciting to see how at least 5
white-tailed eagles and a
goshawk harassed the waterfowl. But they didn’t catch any.
The Estonian Ornithological Society (EOÜ) invites all to the winter garden bird survey this weekend (January 28-29). How it is done can be read on the
EOÜ web page.
