Bird-in-a-bush

 

 

The warm weather has brought out the birds-in-a-bush in places. Habitats are broadleaf forests and brushwoods. To begin with two leaves and a stem are sent up, to begin flowering in a hurry. Nutrients are taken from the cherry-sized underground tuber grown in the preceding season, as is the habit of most early flowerers. Birds-in-a-bush secrete nectar and so are pollinated by bumblebees. Fast living – flowers, sets fruit, produces a new underground tuber and to mid-summer no traces remain in nature of the bird-in-a-bush.
