One of our earliest orchids to flower. The green-winged orchid is only found on West Saaremaa or on Muhu, and even there only in about ten locations, elsewhere the plant does not grow. The islands have  plenty of suitable habitats: wooded meadows and dry meadows, alvar juniper stands and other sparsely wooded alvar areas. The green-winged orchid is similar to the early purple orchid (Orchis mascula), but it is lower – only up to about some twenty centimetres high.
