Green hairstreak in spring
The green hairstreaks with a wing spread of just one inch are quite common in Estonia. These relatives of the well-known blues are only differently coloured. We come across them at forest verges, roadsides and where there are shrubs or clumps of plants. The upper surface of the wings of the butterfly is uniformly brown but we usually don’t notice this – only the green colour. At rest, with the wings folded, the green hairstreak looks like a little leaf, blending miraculously well into nature. Of course this meets the need of hiding.
