Female buzzard Katrin admiring the egg – an egg is a little miracle
Common Buzzard Hiireviu Buteo buteo
In buzzard nest no. 2, that of buzzard pair Katrin and Kalju, there is a third egg since Thursday morning. The first egg was laid on April 3rd or Good Friday, the next on April 7th and the third on April 9th. Buzzard eggs are a pale olive colour and covered with darker spots. Buzzards breed for the first time only when they are three years old.
They don’t start incubating at once after laying the first egg and the incubation period is long – 5 weeks.
NB! Buzzards may abandon a nest when they are disturbed at the incubation.

Video clip from the nest of Mari and Mihkel: the partner who has spent time on incubation is gratefully „rewarded“.
Their nest life started in March: the first egg was laid on March 28th, the next on March 31st. The third egg was not laid until April 4th, on Saturday. Early egglayers may have an even longer period between eggs.
So now we have a crib that says that in about 4 weeks the hatching of buzzard chicks can be expected.
