Dipper at Suur Taevaskoda, Ahja River.
On coming near open streaming waters it pays to be alert – in parts of rivers where the waterflow forms rapids or cascades you may meet the dipper, or “river cantor”, “jõeköster”, as people of old called it. The white throat and breast together with the black of the rest of the plumage bring in mind a church dignitary’s habit. Even some movements strengthen the impression – when frightened the “river cantor” seems to make small bows.
As a nesting bird the dipper is rare in Estonia. They fly here for the winter from colder regions in the north, but never occur in great numbers.
