Wood cow-wheat.
A violet-blue colour to sparse grass, road verges and pine copses is brought by wood cow-wheat (Melampyrum nemorosum). It isn’t the petals that are violet but the bracts. Sometimes they are nearly white. The proper flowers are nicely yellow and characteristically turned in one direction. The cow-wheat delights us with colour until summer’s end.
