The common soapwort grows in clumps.
The soapwort (Saponaria officinalis) has a delicate fragrance that reminds a little of mock-orange, but you can’t smell it from far away as with a mock-orange bush, only quite near a patch of soapwort. This isn’t a native plant in Estonia; it is mostly found near old farmhouses, and has become successfully naturalised on road verges and waste land too. Why is it called soapwort: when rubbed in water the sap from its leaves makes a froth.
