It has been glimpsed a few times at the bird feeder this season. The great spotted woodpecker is the best known woodpecker species in Estonia.
The colourful characteristic of the male bird is a red patch at the nape. A black crown and black back feathers, white flecks on the shoulders and red undertail feathers for the female as well as the male add up to a quite bright getup in winter nature.
The greater spotted woodpeckers manage quite well, their numbers grow. An estimate of the winter population is up to three hundred thousand individuals
