Surprisingly unnoticed but common, and a plant with truly beautiful flowers. It prefers humid areas in forests, growing even on rather poor soils deficient in lime.
The beautiful, fragile, star-shaped flowers of the wintergreen have seven petals and seven stamens, and it simply asks for a closer study. Seven isn’t a very usual number in nature.
In autumn we will see how the leaves of the winter chickweed change colour.
