The autumn storm is past, the greys gather on the shore. The limestone table in camera view is covered with just enough water to make it easy to get on to the shore and if needed, to leave quickly.
The long summer feeding tours are finished, but there are still ten degrees of warmth in the water. The spawning period of the fat autumn Baltic herring started in the Saaremaa spawning areas, at up to some twenty metres depth, in the beginning of September and lasts during nearly the whole of October; these areas and the movements of the herrings the greys know much better than even old experienced fishermen.
