Even in winter maples can have a temporary flow of sap during thaw periods. At present the soil isn’t frozen under its snow cover and that too favours sap movement. At Jõgeva the sap started flowing in the sycamore or great maple on January 10. On February 1 there was sap flow in the common maple as well, at an air temperature between only +1 to +2 degrees. On both days the sky was wholly overcast but the sap still flowed. Maple sap flows particularly intensely on sunny days with some degrees of warmth.
