The robin is a small bird, smaller than a sparrow, and it sings most intensely at twilight – one of the first of birds in the morning, stopping at sunrise and beginning again in the evening, an hour and a half before sunset. Robins stop singing in the evening around an hour after sunset, about the same time as thrushes.
Robins start singing at once after having arrived – in the first half of April – and stop in the second half of July. Redbreasts prefer to sing in a tree, but it can be heard on the ground too and even in flight. The warning call of the redbreast is a ticking sound, repeatedly heard when some intruder is in the vicinity.
