Pygmy owl. (23.03.2009, Virumaa)
The night-time owl trips are an inseparable part of March. In calm and not too cold evenings several species can be heard. While the
roughlegged owl and
tawny owl for instance start calling only when it is quite dark,
pygmy owls and
Ural owls call in the evening or morning twilight too. A whistling pygmy owl may even be encountered in full daylight.
During the last few days owls have been quite vocal. I myself have heard tawny owl, pygmy owl, Ural owl and boreal owl. We have still to wait for the Asio owls, they have not arrived yet although solitary winterers have been seen in several places.
