The Golden Eagle nest camera is located far from human settlements, in between the bogs of Soomaa – a territory that the golden eagles have inhabited since at least the second half of the 20th century, when the legendary Estonian naturalist Viktor Masing (1925-2001) discovered a golden eagle nest. The eagles have been active at the nest with the camera since 2011, and five eaglets have fledged and been ringed in the nest.

Golden eagles usually start preparing the nest in late winter, when they bring green conifer branches to the nest. They typically begin laying eggs in the second half of March, but it's not uncommon for there to be "gap years" when the nest is only decorated with fresh branches and the eagles don't settle down to breed.
