According to the preliminary results the observers noted more than 22000 birds from at least 60 species at the Winter Garden Bird Watch on the weekend, January 24–26.

By Monday morning 1200 bird friends who had made observations in 700 locations all over Estonia had forwarded their results to the Ornithological Society. The most abundant species was once again the great tit that made up one fifth of the total number of observed birds. The tree sparrow, siskin, greenfinch and hooded crow were also among the top five. More fieldfares than usual were seen and a rare winterer, a blackcap, was also found.

"The observation results this year were clearly influenced by the absence of winter weather ,” said Aarne Tuulse. the coordinator of the Winter Garden Bird Watch. "In the observation sites on average 28 birds were observed which is ten fewer than in last year’s frost. Many bird friends have not started feeding the birds and this is not needed either in the present weather. The birds find food in nature everywhere and their energy need is less too than in a cold winter ," Aarne  Tuule. added

The Ornithological Society is awaiting observation results until February 2. The results can be entered on the website  www.eoy.ee/talv/vaatlused

The observations can also  be sent by regular mail to the address: Estomian Ornithological Society, Veski 4, 51005 Tartu, Tartu County.

We also look forward to results from observation sites where during one hour no bird was observed.

The Ornithological Society will publish the final summary of the Winter Garden Bird Watch on its website in February.

The Ornithological Society thanks all who took part in the Winter Garden Bird Watch!
