Thanks to Simmo who went by kayak to count the seal pups the web camera was also adjusted and other necessary jobs got done – it is more uncomfortable for white-tailed eagles to sit on the camera now!

The Baltic-facing side of Saaremaa is free of ice and the pupping of grey seals is in its early stage. Thirteen females have given birth, all young are alive and healthy.

You may very well know who is guilty of mischief, but you still have to repair it yourself.

During the whole autumny winter period one storm has chased another. Water and air hold a couple of plus degrees. Soon the whelping period of gray seals begins. We will see if the camera angle can be adjusted until then?

Actually the seals began to gather at the beginning of the thaw, on Thursday. How did the ”greys” know that it would turn into a long-lasting thaw?

Judged by a glance it can be believed that there are well over three hundred there. Where many are together things always happens …

The oystercatcher flocks have arrived. The birds, of both sexes, have a black-and-white plumage, with a long, straight and red beak. The eyes too are red, in addition ringed in orange and the legs pale red, as if bleached in the sea water.

On the weekend, 117 gray seal pups (25 carcasses, not a particularly high mortality rate according to the seal researchers) were counted on the small plot of land where the seal camera is located. At the time of the survey 100 adults were present on land. Ten white-tailed eagles were hoping for easy food.

The old seal bulls with their dark fur and the necks decked with skin folds that are covered with fighting scars split up the territories between themselves, in order to be near the females when the suckling ends, since their heat period starts then.

In the stormy weather of this year a calm day was hard to find. About the situation then: the pupping of grey seals started about two weeks ago, with the beginning of February: the bigger seal pups look this old. There were about 20 of them on the isle but that nearly 50% die is worrying. When the active period on the isle has ended seal researchers Mart and Ivar Jussi will be able to tell more in detail about the situation.

On the seal beach on Thursday we saw at least a hundred individuals with frosty coats, peacefully basking. At the water’s edge it is of course less cold, about -12 degrees. On the western shore of Saaremaa, towards the Baltic, the water temperature approaches zero. Interesting whether the seals will remain on the ice during this year’s birthing period?
