The migrant birds arrive, and to the nestbox of the tit the third tenant of this year has already appeared – the starling.

At 17:25 the greater spotted woodpecker arrived to its usual overnight place – the tit’s nestbox from where it this winter ousted the tit from its secure night accommodation with the ”right of the stronger”. LK’s permanent viewers have surely seen the video. The woodpecker carried out its usual evening routines, had a brief nap.

Some twenty minutes later it started fidgeting around  in the nestbox and a little after six o’clock, but already in dusk, it left the nestbox. No one among the viewers has noticed a flight out  in dusk by the woodpecker earlier:

... exactly two minutes later the starling arrived for a first visit, checked the surroundings for about twenty minutes in quite dense dusk and stayed in the nestbox for the night. See from the webcam: LINK

All proceeded amazingly peacefully as if the woodpecker had realized that one way or another it must hammer out a new nest hollow for its family this year, as in earlier years, and this nestbox is more suitable for the starling …

That a story introducing the starling appeared in LK the same day is pure coincidence – some things simply happen. Interesting anyway, and we will see how early spring will develop.
