Body

Black stork      Must-toonekurg          Ciconia nigra

The storklets practise flying already for a couple of days. Good that they find their way back to the nest which shows that the young birds manage orienteering.

Attentive viewers will have noticed that rings appeared on the feet of the male a few days ago. The Kotkaklubi team managed to catch the male and ring him (in the nesting period they did not want to take such a risk). He recovered quickly from the fright and has been feeding the storklets nicely during the last couple of days. There is no reason to think that the storklets are starving. The adults often try to attract their young out of their ”comfort zone”. After all, before going on the long migration they must be able to manage on their own in life.

We have not seen the female. As in previous years, the female leaves earlier than the others to head for the wintering grounds.
