Male November moth

November moth    Tume-hallavaksik        Epirrita dilutata

There are three Epirria species in Estonia and they have very similar wing patterns and colouring.

The November moth, Epirria dilutata, occurs in all Estonia but is more common in the west. Occasionally it is even present in great numbers. They are most often seen in oak stands and wooded meadows from mid-September to mid-October.

Giant funnel mushroom in Kütiorg

Giant funnel; Giant Leucopax    Hiid-lehtervahelik    Leucopaxillus giganteus

A ”giant ” with a diameter of almost half a metre.

In Estonia they are found almost every year but are not numerous anywhere.

The pale whitish cap is slightly funnel-shaped, edges wavy and spores the colour of the cap. The height of the stem depends of course on the size of the mushroom as does the diameter but may reach up to 10 centimetres.

Week in the woods. Autumn equinox.

September 22nd was the autumn equinox. Now night is longer than the day until spring. Evening dusk is already so cool that the breath of the boar herd that came to the sett steamed. It is good to see how the piglets from spring have filled out and that overall the herds in the woods here are large and healthy. A few tens of kilometres away the picture is different. The pest is doing its work and herds dwindle.

Maple leaf

Calendar autumn started at 17.21 on September 22

We will see whether there will be time for anthocyanins to be created in the leaves, to colour the leaves beautifully red?

Or will the yellow and orange carotenoids remain dominant in the tree crowns – colours that were present in the leaves already in summer and that simply become visible when the chlorophyll breaks down?

The early autumn nights have been warm this year. But for the birth of an autumn in red colours in tree crowns we need light frost bites at night and sunny autumn days. In places the south sides of maples are eye-catching with beautifully coloured leaves. Whether we will get a fiery autumn the nearest future will show.

… but we see colours everywhere.
